Day 1

From Nyborg we crossed the Great Belt Bridge (Storebaeltforbindelsen) - the amazing structure we'd seen from our campsite. It's one of the largest in the world, incorporating the Western low level bridge - a long way on posts, and the Eastern suspension bridge - it's 18km long, and 4 lanes wide! From Zealand island to Funen island. (There's an underground rail tunnel too) The weather was pretty poor but still an amazing experience.

We travelled to our next campsite and had a lovely pitch - near but not under trees this time. Lots of space, and nice though somewhat old fashioned facilities (only 4 showers for whole campsite!). They did however have a very efficient washer and dryer, so we were able to get our washing done! We went for a nice walk, found a bar, saw swans, lots of swifts, highland cattle, and I spotted a RED squirrel!

The weather was showery, and the rain did wake us both up in the night at one point. The campsite was quiet and we generally slept well.

Day 2: Copenhagen

We woke up to lovely sunshine (& dressed accordingly - let the reader note!), ready for our day trip to Copenhagen. We started our adventure by walking to the train station - interesting through a very residential area (with construction still going on). Mostly apartments, some with balconies, but with canals and duck-ponds interspersed! We noted that closer to the city were more high rise and apartments wheras in the suberbs it was more bungalows and houses.

We caught the 'S train' into Copenhagen, where we walked around the gardens, palaces and museums and admired all the coloured houses and buildings. We decided against joining the queue for Tivoli gardens after hearing it cost and was full of rides! There was plenty to see, and we found a lovely cafe on the waterside where we had a traditional smorgasbord lunch.

Now we'd watched the tour boats going round and thought that might be a fun way to see around the city. For the first 10 minutes it was lovely - we put our suncream on and enjoyed the trip, making sure we remained seated as we passed under the low bridges, and hearing all about the city.

Then he said "I'm going to pass these ponchos out as there may be some rain coming". The rain did come - and in torrents! We had raincoats and an umbrella, and put one of the ponchos over our [bare] legs, but we didn't really see that much through the rain....it was an experience! We didn't think we were too wet until we stood up - then we discovered how soggy our bottoms were!!! ;-)

I must admit I was a little grumpy at this point, saved only by the discovery of "God coffee" - must be good! After a walk around some more nice gardens, we arrived at a cafe with aperol spritz on tap, and met a lovely Swedish couple with whom we chatted about all-sorts including our 2 grandsons (each). Dinner followed, then a trip on the metro, followed by the S train, and then walk the final bit home. Having walked nearly 8 miles around Copenhagen, got soaked, and managed public transport we were rather tired - so glad to be back for a good sleep before moving onto Sweden tomorrow!
